Sources // Adverts

Before radio and TV, the best way to let people know about a coming show was a newspaper advert. Cinema managers and travelling exhibitors often advertised in their local newspaper, and these ads provide important evidence about what was being shown and what a night out might consist of. However, many other shows used posters or handbills rather than the newspapers; hence these collections do not tell the whole story. The bulk of these adverts correspond to two 'snapshot' dates in 1913 and 1918, for which material was gathered from over 100 newspapers from all over Scotland preserved through the NEWSPLAN initiative.
